Current status of project:
- We were told by Mr. Clay that the Electronic Urine Meter project had become available.
- We met Mr. Clay on Friday and went over the various technologies that have been used to monitor patient urine output. These include
- Ultrasonics
- Capacitive sensing
- Camera Monitoring
- We also discussed possible methods that have not been explored:
- Using electromagnetics to detect urine flow via dipoles created by water.
- Using a laser diode to sense urine flow optically.
- Cost is the largest concern with the project, as it needs to compete with the foley catheters and lab analysis by nurses. As such, much of the measurement should occur in the catheter itself.
Work planned for next week:
- Review possible technologies, see which will be most cost effective to build.
- Review the Bard patent on the original electronic urine meter.
